GOOD  MORNING  FRIENDS
We
are
but
ONE
DAY
AWAY
from
as so stated in the magnificent musical

I know not how "lusty" the month of May will or will not be,
but I can tell you May has been a
LONG TIME COMING
especially for those of us in the northern states.
" Vat a vinter ve had!  "

AND
when looking at the above
CAMELOT
items
what memories flow,
not the least of which is
" Learner and Lowe ".
What a team, then add in
Moss Hart
to that mix
and
We've ourselves a
Broadway Smash
ladies and gentlemen.

All that reminds me of another song
[ not Broadway ]

THANKS

AND
to those who did not

I was speaking to one of my Dear O's yesterday on the phone [ he does not read this Blog nor is he on Facebook.  Should I mention his name ( which I will not ) most of you would not know him, although a couple of you would.  AT ANY RATE.... I was sharing with him the KASIYH Blog post about Baltimore and my perception of where the division was amongst us.  Then I told him that I hoped some folks might gain some insight and possibly open up to at least  understand  where others are coming from.  My friend very bluntly said " That's not going to happen Gregory."   I was taken back by this statement and asked how he could be so sure.  His reply went something like this "Once people hold a certain opinion, it is very VERY hard to get them to change that opinion.  That goes double or triple if it is a type of thought that runs in their family and/or in the general area at large." [Where this opinion is held by the majority around them]  It just doesn't happen" [ meaning that people will change their opinion ].  I was even less happy with that second statement.  Since this man has known us around 45 years, I said " That last statement is not true.  MJ and I went from staunch conservatives to progressives ,,, and THAT is quite a change Dear Heart!"  To which he replied, " Ah, but you and Michael are rare, extremely rare.  I am telling you that by and far that type of a metamorphosis does not happen.  Trust me. " So I then asked the obvious " Then where's the hope for change?  How are things going to improve if people hold fast to their opinions and are not open to any other possibilities ? " He said: "That's a great question, and my first response is that things will not change.  They will only get worse, until .......  But my second thought is that  perhaps  things might improve through our youth.,,,and education. Perhaps.  "  He went on about other things from here but that is the gist of the conversation.

Do you agree with "John's" [not his real name btw ] statement?
That when people hold an opinion that seems embedded in them and is supported by their family and friends, etc.,
that said opinion rarely, if ever, changes ?

I'm obviously not speaking of whether you went from
liking the color green to liking the color blue,
but rather larger decisions,
opinions that really have some importance in life.

Have you ever experienced a change in opinion
about something of importance?

I'll give you a couple of personal examples.
Some of you may want to bow out now
or
have your nitro glycerin handy.

And please
DO NOT
make these your topics on Facebook
when we discuss today's Blog post
or
I. WILL. DELETE. THEM.

I used to firmly believe in corporal punishment,
even "spanking" dogs
[ like with a newspaper ]
now not so much,
for children OR dogs.
I can't see that violence solves challenges.

I used to believe that abortion was wrong
and
I had the obligation to rail against it.
Now days
abortion still makes me personally  very  uneasy
however
I am unsure I have the right to force anyone
into a decision concerning their health and body.

I used to believe that the smaller government was a good thing.
Period.
Now I believe that we, as a nation,
have an obligation to care for the poor, the aged, the disenfranchised.
If that involves a larger government, so be it.
I cannot bear the thought of ANYone going hungry in this great nation of ours.
If your attitude is:
" Well they should get off their butts and get a job."
then you are asinine and illiterate as to what is truly happening in our land.

You get the idea, right ?
So now that I have infuriated some of you
and lost some readers,
share your thoughts on the question:

Once someone holds an opinion that is embedded in them,
and is supported by their family, friends
and the local area,
is it a  very rare thing  for them to change that opinion ?

Have YOU ever changed YOUR opinion
on an issue of importance
and
if you feel so inclined,
what was the issue?

Thanks!

MY  MOTTO  FOR  TODAY
GOOD  MORNING  FRIENDS

For the numerous responses to
yesterday's Blog post:

ROBIN  DEAN  SMITH

As usual I read all of your responses [ and in some cases re-read them ] on Facebook.  We are quite the diverse group, are we not?  I applaud each and every one of you... EVERY one of you... for expressing your views on this touchy subject.

Let's not glibly or lightly just hop off this topic. If you would be so kind, go back and read the comments, the articles, the opinions and positions of each person who was forthwith enough to express themselves yesterday.  Please don't just putz around and say you haven't the time ,,, this is our country we are talking about.  Be like NIKE and  Just Do It .  Please.  I'll wait [Theme song from Jeopardy plays in the background whilst he waits ............ ]

What do you see ?

What do you feel ?

What is your main emotion
after reading those responses and articles ?

Are you  trying  to understand
other's viewpoints? *

I was perplexed at some of the responses that seemed to miss the entire point of what has happened/is happening in Baltimore, South Charleston, Freguson, and all across our land.  At the risk of ticking some of you off, could you STOP [for just a moment] and look at what's happening from a perspective perhaps WIDER than your own?   This isn't simply about incriminating or defending police ANYwhere, do you understand that?  This isn't about black vs white, this goes much deeper than the death [horrid as that was] of Freddie Gray.

IMHO Dianne Comiskey came very close to hitting the nail on the head when she wrote: " ...I believe class, not race, is at the heart of our problem.  And my biggest sadness is that we will never change the imbalance since those in power perpetuate it."

Did you even read the article [ link posted by Steve Harris ] which quotes Orioles COO John Angelo's response to this situation?  It is NOT a lengthy article. PLEASE read it,,, it is very worth your time. Try, I beg you, to widen your perspective.  Please.

The links posted by Barb Stanton McNinch were excellent also. The one about the extent of police brutality was heart breaking. What is happening in Baltimore is not new to Baltimore.  There is a pattern there [and one would presume in other places also] that has been going on for years and years, ignored for the most part.  Until now. This situation will continue in Baltimore and across our land if we hold fast to our parochial ways and entertain no other thoughts or opinions to enter our minds.  Period.

*  I know that some of you have not and will not read those articles.  There are some of you, listed above, that would be hard pressed to read those articles if Jesus Himself physically stood in front of you and asked you to do so.  Then again I find it hard to figure out whether refusing to read those articles is worse than reading them and still not gleaming anything from them.  There, that should tick some people off.

Fell of the wagon in a way yesterday.  Ker-plunk.  I did not eat anything overtly bad [ no sugary treats, etc.] but ate simply too much and allowed myself to  graze  a bit too, all late afternoon. [4:30pm - 6:15pm].  And the scales showed it this morning, even though I purposely waited to weigh in until much later than usual.  Well here's transparent me....... well, I guess NOT so transparent me !

Personal Note:  The honesty and compassion of you, my friends, never, ever ceases to amaze me.

simultaneously delights my heart and humbles me.
Thank you.

What The Heck Is Happening ?

Remember that we no longer receive broadcast TV so to speak, so current events come to us via internet of some sort or possibly radio [ yes, we still have one going ].  Last evening I saw FACEBOOK light up with comments about what appeared to be riots somewhere.  This morning I checked it out via The Washington Post on my Kindle and WoW!  I can only begin to imagine the anger over these "incidents" that continue to happen as regards the African-American community all across the U.S. , but what happened in Baltimore put me back to the 1960's...and The CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite.

As we discovered from Ferguson, Missouri there are often two sides to a story, so am trying not to rush to judgement here.  From my point of view I can see frustration on both sides.  My heart breaks for the family of Freddie Gray.   I applaud them as well as the clergy members who called for "calm" after Freddie's funeral yesterday.  My heart also goes out to the police who were injured in yesterday's upheavals as well as to their families.  I truly believe that most law enforcement men and women are trying to protect us and do the best possible job they can.  Period.

So what the heck is happening ?
[ racially speaking ]
Not just in Baltimore, but across our country ?

Are things worse than ever now
or
are things just becoming more evident ?

What am I missing ?

I am interested in ALL opinions on this topic
but especially those who might be exposed to larger areas
than just our beloved Allegany County, NY.
[ Better yet if you used to live here and now perhaps have a different perspective]

If like me you believe in the power of prayer,
let's keep ALL those involved in this current Baltimore situation
 in our prayers please.
[ As well as the rest of our country and the world itself.]

If you are more of a
" Good Vibrations "
( always reminds me of the Beach Boys )
type person
then please send some good vibes towards Baltimore, MD.

Didn't feel quite as dedicated yesterday as I'd hoped I would, weight and exercise wise,  Still managed to stay "in bounds" so to speak, but just no great strides were made.   Yet I will not be defeated, this is a long-run not a sprint.  I. Will. Do.  This.

BRUCE   JENNER

Did you watch his interview with Diane Sawyer ?

When ABC's Diane Sawyer opened the program by stating that there seems to be a "generational divide"  opinion wise [ those of us who are seasoned enough to recall Bruce back in his Olympic days and those who know him only currently ] she could not have made a more true statement [INHO]. I have discussed this situation with a couple of my friends and it sure has caused some discussion. Talking is good [ for the most part].  It means, in this case I believe, that we are  trying  to sort out our feelings.  And, in at least my own case, there are many feelings to be sorted through.

I did not relish watching this interview.  Period.  My deepest core desires to remember Bruce Jenner as the Olympic athlete, all American guy and macho hunk.  Period.  To have to do an "about face" on this desire ,,, hurts to be honest.  But can my personal inner upheaval even begin to rival his life experience on the subject?  I think not.

BRUCE  JENNER
as many of us recall him.

 BRUCE JENNER
becoming who [according to him] he was meant to be.

I fully realize that there is a religious angle to this situation; " God don't make no junk!" that some will assert, and that is their right.  I also know that some are simply sickened by the entire topic of transgender, whether it be Bruce Jenner or Debbie becoming Donnie "Downer", etc.  Some prefer to ignore it.  Period.  And that is their right also.  I respect that option [ I don't totally understand it, but I respect it].

Particularly if you actually WATCHED THE INTERVIEW, I would be interested in knowing your thoughts on it AND on the transgender topic overall.  You may also comment even if you didn't watch the interview, although I truly feel that to have seen it  might  just have helped a bit to understand some things.  Just sayin' ....... don't hurt the messenger.

So our
QUESTION of the DAY
is:

YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE
BRUCE  JENNER
INTERVIEW
WITH DIANE SAWYER.

There are things that I have chosen not to share on this Blog, health wise, [for personal reasons] relating to treadmill use, so please be a bit more judicious about negative comments in that regard, That being stated, I  DID  manage to do one mile on the treadmill yesterday late afternoon.  This is a first for me in a . . .  v-e-r-y  l-o-n-g  t-i-m-e.  It was by no means a "pretty" mile, I had to step off the Tm for 20-30 seconds a few times due to cramps in my calves,,, and it took a pitifully long time to complete,,,, but  I. DID. IT.
It is such a tiny accomplishment when I remember that not all that long ago I was doing 5-7 miles per day  minimum, often with a weight vest of 30-40 pounds strapped to me.  [ NOW DAYS that weight vest is truly attached to me = Ka-Boom ! ]  Yet I cannot let what used to be deter me from what my current goal.  I. Can. Do. This.

Yesterday's Stats and Facts:
Caloric Intake:             1145
Exercise: Tm calories   168

Today's W8 at 6:00am      244.2
[ Down 2.4 lbs. from yesterday AND down  9 lbs  from one week ago. ]

The weekend is indeed my weakest point so far.  Have not acquiesced to the temptation that haunts me [yet] but it sure is difficult.  Geeeeeeesh.  Last evening when MJ was done at 7 Martin St. he came home and not too long thereafter asked if I was hungry.  I. Just. Looked. At. Him.  [ He continues to be very supportive, don't get me wrong ].

I replied:   "I  dream  of jumping into a VAT of party cake ICE CREAM and eating until I freaking BLOW UP! "

MJ:  " So it's sugar you are craving,,, sweets in other words? "

Me:  " Sweets and pizza and subs and potatoes and french fries  and big thick juicy hamburgers smothered in cheeses of ALL types and icing ,,,, from a can!   AND it's not called 'craving' Michael ,,, we passed craving eons ago ..... this is absolute undeniable  LUST.  I fully expect to have a nocturnal emission tonight whilst dreaming about unhealthy but every so deeeeee-licious  FOOD ! "

MJ:  " Stay on your own side of the bed."

You get the point, right?  I have been through this before so I am ever-so-aware that it passes. We are in the early phases of this endeavor and I simply must hang with it.  Believe it or not y'all have helped me with your advice and kudos.   I WILL keep on keepin' on ... come you know what or high water.

You know what INSPIRED me to no end back in 1999? ... [ Well actually it was the end of 1998 as I hadn't been diagnosed with the Type II Diabetes yet, but due to smoking was having a hard time breathing and the w8 was HUGE also,at any rate,,, ] My Dr. said:  " You are out of control Greg. I rarely see someone so out of control. This is serious."  Okay, I cared not about the 'serious' part, what drove ME crazy was his implication [ yes, it was true, but let's call it an implication, alright ?] that I, Gregory K. Shelley was NOT in control.  To this very moment in time I can still recall how freaking ANGRY and UPSET that statement made me feel.  HOW DARE HE ?  We agreed that the first thing was to stop smoking which my Dr. thought I would not be able to do,,,and which of course I did do January 19, 1999. The rest followed suit ,,, but that statement STILL irritates me to this day.

Hence when I become like I was last evening [ " Javva the Hutt be hungry " ] I ask myself this question:  " So who's in charge here Greg, YOU or the food ?   Who's going to win this battle? " That usually does the trick, for me at least.  Have no idea WHY it works, it's not like I'm a control freak or anything.

Yesterday's Stats and Facts:
Caloric Intake:              1616
Exercise:  Just house chores

Today's  W8 at 7:30am   246.6
[ Same as yesterday but that's ok = still 5.2 lbs less than the previous Sunday and 6.6 lbs less than 2 Sunday's ago.]
