GOOD MORNING FRIENDS
as so stated in the magnificent musical
I know not how "lusty" the month of May will or will not be,
but I can tell you May has been a
LONG TIME COMING
especially for those of us in the northern states.
" Vat a vinter ve had! "
when looking at the above
what memories flow,
not the least of which is
" Learner and Lowe ".
What a team, then add in
to that mix
We've ourselves a
ladies and gentlemen.
All that reminds me of another song
[ not Broadway ]
to all who commented on yesterday's Blog post
to those who did not
[ you meant my expectations straight down the line. ]
BARB STANTON McNINCH
I was speaking to one of my Dear O's yesterday on the phone [ he does not read this Blog nor is he on Facebook. Should I mention his name ( which I will not ) most of you would not know him, although a couple of you would. AT ANY RATE.... I was sharing with him the KASIYH Blog post about Baltimore and my perception of where the division was amongst us. Then I told him that I hoped some folks might gain some insight and possibly open up to at least understand where others are coming from. My friend very bluntly said " That's not going to happen Gregory." I was taken back by this statement and asked how he could be so sure. His reply went something like this "Once people hold a certain opinion, it is very VERY hard to get them to change that opinion. That goes double or triple if it is a type of thought that runs in their family and/or in the general area at large." [Where this opinion is held by the majority around them] It just doesn't happen" [ meaning that people will change their opinion ]. I was even less happy with that second statement. Since this man has known us around 45 years, I said " That last statement is not true. MJ and I went from staunch conservatives to progressives ,,, and THAT is quite a change Dear Heart!" To which he replied, " Ah, but you and Michael are rare, extremely rare. I am telling you that by and far that type of a metamorphosis does not happen. Trust me. " So I then asked the obvious " Then where's the hope for change? How are things going to improve if people hold fast to their opinions and are not open to any other possibilities ? " He said: "That's a great question, and my first response is that things will not change. They will only get worse, until ....... But my second thought is that perhaps things might improve through our youth.,,,and education. Perhaps. " He went on about other things from here but that is the gist of the conversation.
Do you agree with "John's" [not his real name btw ] statement?
That when people hold an opinion that seems embedded in them and is supported by their family and friends, etc.,
that said opinion rarely, if ever, changes ?
I'm obviously not speaking of whether you went from
liking the color green to liking the color blue,
but rather larger decisions,
opinions that really have some importance in life.
Have you ever experienced a change in opinion
about something of importance?
I'll give you a couple of personal examples.
Some of you may want to bow out now
have your nitro glycerin handy.
make these your topics on Facebook
when we discuss today's Blog post
I. WILL. DELETE. THEM.
I used to firmly believe in corporal punishment,
even "spanking" dogs
[ like with a newspaper ]
now not so much,
for children OR dogs.
I can't see that violence solves challenges.
I used to believe that abortion was wrong
I had the obligation to rail against it.
abortion still makes me personally very uneasy
I am unsure I have the right to force anyone
into a decision concerning their health and body.
I used to believe that the smaller government was a good thing.
Now I believe that we, as a nation,
have an obligation to care for the poor, the aged, the disenfranchised.
If that involves a larger government, so be it.
I cannot bear the thought of ANYone going hungry in this great nation of ours.
If your attitude is:
" Well they should get off their butts and get a job."
then you are asinine and illiterate as to what is truly happening in our land.
You get the idea, right ?
So now that I have infuriated some of you
and lost some readers,
share your thoughts on the question:
Once someone holds an opinion that is embedded in them,
and is supported by their family, friends
and the local area,
is it a very rare thing for them to change that opinion ?
Have YOU ever changed YOUR opinion
on an issue of importance
if you feel so inclined,
what was the issue?
