What did your early Christmases look like ?

What were the decorations ?

What smells do you associate
with those childhood Christmases?

When did you Christmas tree generally go up
and
get decorated ?
[ Some folks waited till 12/24 when the kids were in bed ]

Christmas music and/or Radio/TV Christmas Specials ?

I'll give you an idea of what I recall
then you share with us
your early childhood Christmas memories.

* Always a real Christmas tree.
[ Had artificial trees even been invented yet? ]
So of course the living smelled like a pine tree.

* C9 size lights on the tree
and
bubble lights also !

* Lots of tinsel on the tree.

* Red and green crepe paper strong across
the living room diagonally
with
folding green and red crepe paper bells
hung from the ceiling where the crepe paper streamer met.

* Old family heirloom Christmas ornaments
which we had to darned careful not to break
[ in addition to more recent ornaments ]

* Tons and tons of Mom-made
CHRISTMAS CANDY.

* Going
[the long way = no expressway]
to
Olean
to see
Santa Claus Lane
[ usually Thanksgiving night when it was first lit up ]

* Memorizing our lines for the
annual Christmas program
at
The First Baptist Church of Belmont.
[ And the church's HUMONGOUS Christmas tree ]
After the program
everyone
got their own box of hard Christmas candy !

* Tons of Christmas music playing on records
[ vinyl to you younger folks ]
including
children's records
that were like heavy plastic and came in various colors,
especially red and yellow and green.

* Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Andy Williams
Christmas specials on TV
AND
" Straight from the North Pole"
[ actually Buffalo, NY if memory serves ]
SANTA and his helper FORGETFUL
